M83 - 'Hurry Up, We're Dreaming'

Mute; 2011
Our Take - 9.1
Synth-genius turned arena-rocker Anthony Gonzalez finally made the album he has always wanted to make.  In interviews leading up the the release of Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, Gonzales assured us that the album was to be, "very, very, very, epic."  But haven't all M83 albums been epic?  Yes, but not like this...

Hurry Up is a limitless and hugely expansive sounding double album that hides synthy pop gems between lush and indulgent instrumentals.  With the record, Gonzalez creates a parallel musical universe-- filled with youthful nostalgia and a longing for something unreachable.  Each pop song is up to bar with anything he has written in the past, and the instrumentals really reinforce the idea of the album being otherworldly.

Everything on this record seems larger than life.  It is sincere in it's attempt to reach every part of the auditory system, to touch on every emotion in the spectrum-- at times it can seem overblown and overly expansive,  too big even.  But isn't that part of the appeal of a record that doesn't hold anything back such as this?  You have to give it to Gonzalez, for just going for it, holding nothing back, and it's impossible to ignore the results.

Don't Miss - "Midnight City", "Claudia Lewis", "Steve McQueen", "Intro", "Wait", "OK Pal".
